In school, we learn about the building blocks of life. For plants, that’s water, sunlight, air, and soil. But there’s another necessary element that is often forgotten: space.
Without space, without the room for existence and ultimately growth, life can’t take hold. It suffocates.
Likewise, both creativity (the force that leads to creation) and the actual ability — the means — for something to come to life needs space to breathe. Space to grow.
Not just space in a physical sense, but time, attention, and opportunity.
I find myself thinking about this as I watch my son learn and grow. His learning to take up space so that he can play. Space to learn to be creative. To make mistakes, and try again until he gets it.
I’m also thinking about all this as I start the last year of my 30s and I reflect on my career and the projects I’ve willed into existence and given the space to grow.
But it also naturally leads me to think about the projects that haven’t received the space to be nourished and thus weren’t given a chance. Because I didn’t have the time. Or money. Or attention.
Most I’ve forgotten. And some are vague memories. But a few still linger and occasionally ask if it’s their time yet.
Not yet, little friend. Maybe someday.
You can have it all just rarely at the same time ✨
